2025 Exploring Northern Nova Scotia
There’s no better way to experience the natural beauty of northern Nova Scotia than from the seat of a dirt bike or dualsport, and our recent NSORRA Big Bike Friendly Rec Ride from Debert to Folly Mountain proved just that. Riders Marc (GasGas 300), Philip (Tenere 700), and Todd (KTM 690) joined me on an unforgettable tour through Colchester and Cumberland counties, and the terrain, views, and camaraderie did not disappoint.
Lakes, Look-Offs, and a Castle
As promised, this route delivered a full range of scenic highlights. We visited lakes, rivers, a beautiful waterfall, and even the legendary Johnston Lake castle tucked away in the woods. Several look-offs along the way gave us panoramic views of both PEI and the Bay of Fundy – a rare treat to see both in one ride.
The trails were a mix of logging roads, ATV and snowmobile trails, and rugged terrain, offering a perfect balance for both full-sized enduro bikes and larger adventure machines. It was a real ride-through-the-wild kind of day.

A Pit Stop with a Twist
Near New Annan, we stopped at what looked like a gravel pit. Philip, who works in a nickel mine in Sudbury, surprised us all with his knowledge. He identified the site as resembling a test mine for coal, adding a cool educational moment to our day.
We stopped midway at my camp for a hotdog break, which hit the spot. After lunch, Philip headed back to New Brunswick. His fully loaded Tenere 700 – complete with tools and spare parts – showed just how prepared he was for anything the ride could throw at him.
The Bikes Held Their Own
Marc was amazed his GasGas 300 managed over 100 km on a single tank, thanks to expert jetting by Triple S Cycle Works, one of our awesome NSORRA sponsors. My NSORRA X-trainer barely sipped any fuel all day. After topping up our tanks, we set off for the second half of the ride, which included a view of the new Minas Basin and a scenic iron bridge crossing.
Trail Work and Teamwork
On the way back, we retraced the River Trail we’d ridden that morning. A large deadfall had come down in the meantime and blocked our way. Luckily, I’d packed a saw, and we quickly got the trail cleared.

Over 130 km of Adventure
By the end of the day, we had covered over 130 km in 8.5 hours. Whether it was Philip from New Brunswick or Todd from Shelburne, it’s hard to say who traveled further to join the ride, but everyone walked (or rode) away with a full day of adventure under their belts.
Thank You to Our Sponsors
A huge shoutout to Co-operators Insurance, our Rec Ride sponsor, and Rallye Motoplex and Marine, our Dualsport sponsor, for supporting this ride and helping NSORRA bring these kinds of experiences to life.
